The LGBTQ+ Support Group Being Held Via Zoom on Thursdays at 5:30 pm (276) 466-2218 (office) Please contact dreamahawkins@crisiscenterinc.org .. Title IX is a federal civil rights law passed as part of the Education Amendments of 1972. This law protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive Federal financial assistance. Title IX states that:
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Title IX applies to any institution receiving federal financial assistance from the Department of Education, including state and local educational agencies. Educational programs and activities that receive federal funds from the Department of Education must operate in a nondiscriminatory manner. Also, a recipient may not retaliate against any person for opposing an unlawful educational practice or policy, or because a person made charges, testified or participated in any complaint action under Title IX. There is considerable controversy over the recent changes made to Title IX. The Bristol Crisis Center is aware that this may cause some possible confusion. We want to let the community know that we are keeping up with the kinds of events that could have an impact on the populations we serve through our programs and we are here for your support. Bristol Crisis Center has been given a Rural Sexual Assault grant in order to provide community education for community professionals and services for male LGBTQ+ sexual assault survivors. This trauma informed training and education is meant to address an often underreported problem and continue the Bristol Crisis Center’s focus of serving the community through education, advocacy and intervention
allowing individuals to find positive solutionsfor personal crisis. Through support, hope and education we strive to restore emotional balance to individuals and the communities in which they live. If you have any questions please contact Dreama Hawkins Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Advocate and LGBTQ+ Advocate and Community Educator (276) 466-2218 (office) Our core values include resilience, dignity, integrity, restoration, and leadership. This will be my last letter as the Bristol Crisis Center Executive Director. I will be retiring effective May 29th. In a little over three years that I have been here, we have seen a lot of change. Our building has had a complete makeover. We have gone from three grants to seven grants. We have been deleted from the at- risk category with the state.
Our certification with the American Association of Suicidology was extended from three years to five years. We have gone from four staff to six staff and we have gained back our sexual assault response team. As I look back, I am proud of the growth and I want to acknowledge that it couldn’t have happened without the excellent staff we have. With all the things happening in our nation at the present time, the pandemic, the election, the adverse effects on our economy, the need for Bristol Crisis Center is more evident than ever. We have continued our services, even during the weeks when it was safer for our staff to work from home. Our sexual assault response team still went to the hospital with victims, our hotline continued to operate and we still called our Just Checking folks. The Center, like many other agencies, has been hit financially. The IRS says that $300 of charitable donations can be used this year on your taxes even if you don’t itemize. I hope that you take advantage of this option and if you do that please remember the Bristol Crisis Center. Let me thank you in advance for your generosity and please know that we care and are here for you and our community. Be safe and happy.
