Stalking

In order to promote awareness of serious issues facing our community, we offer the following statistics on domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking in both Tennessee and Virginia.  If you are in need of additional statistics, please contact our center.

 

 

 

Tennessee

 

In 2001, there were 63,802 domestic violence incidences throughout the state. That includes all domestic murders, assaults and sexual offenses.

TBI - Crime In TN 2001

 

Shelter was given to 7,399 men, women and children. Due to lack of funding, 4,621 men, women and children were turned away from domestic violence shelters.

OCJP Report, 2002-2003

 

Virginia

 

73,894 Virginians were served by domestic violence or sexual assault programs in 2002. 4,249 of those served were children.

Shelter was given to 3,916 families, but 1,596 families were turned away due the shelter being "full."

Rape is the most undereported crime in the U.S.

Tennessee

 

Law Enforcement received the following reports in 2002:

#  2,308 forcible rapes

#  400 cases of forcible sodomy

#  235 incidents of sexual assault with an object

#  2,392 forcible fondlings

#  91 cases of incest

#  638 cases of statutory rape

TBI - Crime In TN 2002

 

One out of every nine women in Tennessee will become victims of sexual assault. 

 

Virginia

 

5,039 sexual assaults were reported to VA Police in 2001 with an estimate of only 1 out of every 6 actual rapes reported.

 

That means there could have been as many as 30,234 actual rapes in the state of Virginia in 2001.

 

1,335 of the founded child abuse cases in Virginia in 1997-98 were sexual abuses.

STALKING IS A CRIME under the laws of both Tennessee and Virginia.

 

 

While stalking is a gender-neutral crime, 78% of victims are female while 87% of perpetrators are male.
